Coming from a family of football fans, I am surprised I have never attempted a football pitch cake before this day! This cake was for an 8 year old boy who was having a *huge* party with nearly 50 guests so I knew this cake had to be a big one!
The sponge is a plain vanilla with a buttercream and jam filling.
With larger cakes, remember it is not only the overall image that is important but the smaller details. Luckily this is where my brothers came in useful to explain exactly where the mud should go on the players:
