Sea Shell Cake

A Sea Shell Cake is one of the easiest to make; you don't need to be perfect with your icing, you don't need to order in specialist ingredients, and you don't need to be overly creative! The only thing you do need are some sea shells so it may be worth saving some on your next visit to the seaside... or visit your local homeware and soft furnishing store as I did and find them on the bathroom aisle oddly enough!

A top tip for creating an illusion of sand: use golden caster sugar- it has a wonderful amber colour. Spoon it out of the packet- do not sieve it- a few lumps adds texture to your sand as you can see in the picture above.
Untested but heard of: crumple Weetabix in amongst the sand for more texture and a little bit of ordinary caster sugar to add some sparkle amongst the sand

This cake was made at 6am before work the morning it was required a surprise for my mum but you could certainly use this as a basic design. Why not add a starfish? And icecream cones upside down to make sandcastle turrets on a larger cake? And as a final touch why not add a miniature wooden deckchair from a dolls-house as a cake topper?
